As it was supposed, Donald Trump made official during a speech in Florida on Tuesday November 15 that he was running for the American presidential election for 2024. Explaining this choice, he announced that he wanted to prevent Biden from being re-elected and make America great again.
The former US president announced his candidacy during a speech from his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, a week after the midterm elections, in which Republicans won fewer seats in Congress than expected.
Donald Trump’s return to politics
Donald Trump spoke for just over an hour in front of hundreds of his supporters gathered in a ballroom in which dozens of American flags were displayed. “In order to make America great again, I announce tonight my candidacy for the presidency of the United States”said Donald Trump.
The former head of state criticized Joe Biden’s presidency, while emphasizing what he described as the successes of his tenure. “Two years ago we were a great nation, and soon we will be a great nation again,” he said. When asked if he had an opinion on Donald Trump’s announcement, the US president said: “Not really.” Joe Biden aired a video criticizing Donald Trump’s record on Twitter.
Donald Trump’s candidacy, announced much earlier than usual, shows his desire to discourage his potential rivals to enter the race for the White House, in particular the governor of Florida Ron DeSantis, or his former vice-president Mike Pence. Donald Trump has been actively involved in the midterm electionssupporting some candidates who supported the “stolen” presidential election theory.
Many of them, however, were beaten at the ballot box, in particular for key senator positions. The Republicans, who saw the majority in the Senate escape them, however, seem well on their way to taking control of the House of Representatives.
