Demoted to the rank of fourth goalkeeper at Stade Rennais at the start of the season, Alfred Gomis (29) spoke about his situation in the columns of L’Equipe. The Senegalese international goalkeeper has a little trouble understanding his club’s decision.
“It’s difficult for me to give an explanation. I can only say that at the end of last season I spoke with our technical director (Florian Maurice) and our coach (Bruno Genesio), who informed me of their decision to take a new starting goalkeeper. They told me: ‘If you stay at Rennes, you will be the third goalkeeper.’ Then a goalkeeper is recruited. And there, I am told that I am no longer part of the Rennes project and that I have to leave”, he says.
“I have surely made mistakes as I have also done good things, judges Rennais. But when evaluating a player, it must be done as a whole. Victories and defeats are the result of a set, of “a collective. In the 2021-2022 season, in the first part, I was able to benefit from great continuity, with positive results for the team. With the new year, it was more complicated. Between the Covid , my departure for the CAN, my broken finger, I was unavailable on several occasions. (…) Someone must have said: we no longer need Gomis. I was no longer doing the job, when everything went well for almost two years.”
