A herd of around 100 cattle started walking in a circle on November 4 in China’s Inner Mongolia region and they haven’t stopped since.
A disturbing behavior hits a flock of a hundred sheep in the Inner Mongolia region of China since November 4th.
One by one, the bovids have started to walk in a circle and they don’t stop. This strange phenomenon would affect only the sheep of a single pen of the farm which hosts some 34 herds.
This evil first affected a few sheep before spreading to dozens who thus joined the walk in a circle, as reported The Economic Times.
A video about this bizarre behavior
This information, which took a long time to disclose, was finally published by a Chinese state-run media outlet People’s Daily.
A sheep video walking was posted this Wednesday, November 16 and shows the extent of the mystery which remains unexplained for the time being.
A disease as a probable lead
However what might be the most likely explanation aside from the wildest theories on the subject is a sickness which affects ruminants.
Indeed, in case of ingestion of the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, sheep can develop listeriosis which causes nervous symptoms. Affected animals develop a encephalitis who is almost always fatal.
According to Alliance-breeding, “the animal is initially prostrate, it may present with hyperthermia at 41-42°, anorexia and blindness. Nervous disorders linked to cerebral localization are manifested by a walk in a circle, balance disorders, strabismus… Damage to the cranial nerves causes often unilateral facial paralysis with drooping ears, eyelids and jaws; the animal sometimes keeps food hanging out of the mouth”.
But normally the sheep dies 1 to 4 days after the appearance of the first symptoms.
The mystery remains
But the sheep in China would have been walking for days and therefore would not have died.
In addition, the Chinese state daily People’s Daily assures that the sheep are in good health.
The phenomenon remains unexplained for the time being.
