in Lorient, “we are all shocked”

Lorient La Base is in mourning. This high place of offshore racing has lost two of their own. Alex Picot and François Naveilhan, originally from Vannet, died on Wednesday November 16, 2022, in the capsizing of a follower boat which accompanied Charles Caudrelier, winner of the 12e edition, in Pointe-à-Pitre. They were both in their thirties and employees of OC Sport, based in Lorient (Morbihan), for at least two years. The first as project manager, in charge of the Arkea Ultim Challenge and the Solitaire du Figaro; the second, as commercial and partnerships manager of OC Sport.

At Lorient Grand Large, which coordinates and manages the Lorient racing centre, “we are deeply shocked”, testifies Jean-Philippe Cau, president of the association. Bernard Bocquet, the former president, remembers Alex Picot as “a charming, open, warm boy. He had a thorough knowledge of the sea and nautical organization. When you organize a Solitaire du Figaro or the world tour of the Ultim maxi-trimarans, it means that you are one of the greats of ocean racing. » A boat lover, Alex Picot had founded a start-up in Valves (Morbihan), in 2013, precisely to allow the rental of boats between individuals.

“Alex was a pillar”

“In parallel with his projects, he sailed a lot, he was a keen racer. Especially on the Francethe 19 m of international gauge which participated in several America’s Cups”, confirms Christophe Baudry, former director of Lorient Grand Large. And to continue: “Alex was one of the pillars in the organization of offshore racing. He embodied the new generation. Someone very nice and very professional, with all his personality: he liked to walk barefoot! »

For his part, Fabrice Loher, mayor of Lorient and president of Lorient agglomeration, “Associates itself with the deep sorrow of all the teams of the company OC Sport and wishes to send its sincere condolences to the families of the two victims”. A subsidiary of Télégramme, OC Sports, which organizes the Route du Rhum and the Solitaire du Figaro, has set up in Lorient La Base, accompanies navigators, such as Charles Caudrelier. Initially housed in the Glorieux 1 hangar, the entire team has been renting an office space in Séquoia for six months, a few steps from the former submarine base.
