A woman is dead and a dozen people are still missingafter a landslide caused by torrential rains which washed away several homes on Saturday on the island of Ischia, off Naples, said the prefect of Naples, Claudio Palomba, this Saturday, November 26.
Not the first landslides
“The government expresses its solidarity with the citizens and mayors of the municipalities of the island of Ischia and thanks the rescuers engaged in the search for the missing“, said the President of the Italian Council, Giorgia Meloni.
Southern Italy, where houses are often built without taking into account safety rules, is prone to fatal landslides. In 2006, a landslide killed a father and his three daughters on the island of Ischia.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi clarified that there was “difficulties in relief operations because the weather conditions remained difficult”.
The Italian firefighters also communicated, on Twitter, to explain that “research (was) in progress to find the missing” in the town of Casamicciola, in the north of this volcanic island known in particular for its thermal baths. A car was swept into the sea and its two occupants were rescued, according to firefighters.
